About Us

Nevada Humane Society is a non-profit, charitable organization founded in 1932. As an open-admissions,  no-kill animal shelter, NHS works to find homes and provide care for homeless animals, and to bring people and animals together to make Washoe County a no-kill community.

In 2011, NHS had a save rate of 93%, saving over 9,000 homeless animals through our shelter. We had a countywide save rate of 91% for both dogs and cats, including all animals entering any of the animal shelters in our community. This far exceeds the national average of 58%.

Washoe County has become one of the safest communities in the country for homeless pets.

As a non-profit organization, NHS relies solely on donations from individuals and local businesses to provide our lifesaving services for the animals. NHS is not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States and receives no funding from HSUS or the government.
